Description

This object is a galaxy trio located 160 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +11 degrees.

NGC 2872 is the big bright elliptical galaxy at center. This galaxy spans almost 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 120,000 light years. The galaxy looks somewhat disturbed, with an oval shape whose major axis is orthogonal to the axis of the adjacent galaxy, NGC 2874.

NGC 2874 is a large barred spiral with about the same 120,000 light year diameter as NGC 2872. Bright blue star clusters are seen in the arms of the spiral. Like NGC 2872, this galaxy looks disturbed. The left side has a much more defined structure than on the right side, where a faint star stream looks to be connecting to the elliptical.

The third galaxy of the trio, NGC 2873, is a much smaller spiral at about 35,000 light years in diameter. It has an interesting S-shape within the galaxy disk. This looks like a distant large spiral to me, but the redshift data says that it is in the vicinity of the other 2 galaxies. Surprising that this galaxy shows no signs of disturbance, if it is that close to the other two.

There are many more tiny orange galaxies visible in the background than stars.
